Thinking about withdrawing from a course? Before submitting a withdrawal request, review the information below and consult with your instructor and academic advisor to understand how withdrawing from a course may affect your academic progress, financial aid eligibility, tuition charges, and time to degree completion.
Course Withdrawal Deadline: After the drop period, you may withdraw from a course through the end of the twelfth week of the semester. See the academic calendar for deadlines in shorter terms. Students must withdraw by the refund deadlines to receive a refund for tuition and fees.
Before you withdraw, consider these alternatives. Depending on your circumstances, you may have options that allow you to remain enrolled and continue making progress toward your degree.
Pass-Fail Option
If you're concerned about your grade in a course, you may be eligible to change the course to the Pass-Fail grading option. This allows you to earn credit for the course without a letter grade affecting your GPA. You must consult with your academic advisor before submitting a Pass-Fail Contract, and eligibility restrictions apply.
The Pass-Fail Contract must be approved before the withdrawal deadline.
Incomplete Grade
If unexpected circumstances prevent you from finishing coursework by the end of the semester, you may be able to request an Incomplete (I) grade from your instructor. An Incomplete provides additional time to complete outstanding coursework rather than withdrawing from the course.
To be eligible, you must have completed at least 60% of the term and receive approval from your instructor. An Incomplete may affect financial aid eligibility and future registration if the course is a prerequisite for another class.
If withdrawing from all courses on your schedule, please submit a University Withdrawal or Leave of Absence. Otherwise, please follow the instructions below to withdraw from an individual course (how to video 33 seconds):
- Go to MySCSU
- Select Banner Student
- Records and Registration
- Registration and Schedule Planner
- To drop a course, click Current Schedule, Edit Schedule, change the status to Withdraw, click Save.
- You will receive an email confirmation within 24 hours from the Advising Office to initiate a 2-business day advising/intervention period.
- IMPORTANT! If you believe you withdrew in error, you may request reinstatement within this 2-day window with the Registrar's Office.
Note: If you have a registration hold, please email Registrar@SouthernCT.edu with your student ID and the subject and course number that you would like to withdraw from on your schedule.
Withdrawn courses appear on your transcript with a 'W' grade but do not affect your GPA.
Tuition Impact
You must withdraw by the refund deadline to receive a full or partial refund. Full-time students do not have charges adjusted for individual course withdrawals.
Financial Aid Impact
If withdrawing from a course reduces your enrollment below full-time status, your financial aid may be adjusted. Review Student Planning: How Part-Time Enrollment Affects Financial Aid for details. Your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for continued financial aid eligibility may be impacted as well.
Students may request a Late Course Withdrawal from their instructor before final exam week in the fall and spring semester, or up to the last day of classes in summer and winter sessions.
If you encountered extraordinary circumstances that prevented you from meeting both the regular withdrawal deadline and the late course withdrawal deadline, please contact the Dean for the college or school where the course is offered to discuss your options.
