Sustainability starts at the community level. With the Office of Sustainability, we offer many opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to get involved and participate in creating a better environment.
We participate in volunteering opportunities both on and off campus that anyone can get involved in. Some of our off campus events include volunteering at Massaro Farms, cleaning up Beaver Brook, helping Save the Sound, and various walking tours or sustainable speakers. On campus, we accept volunteers at the community garden and for food recovery. Check our instagram to see volunteering opportunities and email us about transportation to off campus events if needed. We do our best to make sure all that are interested can join us.

Annually, we hold the Fall Harvest Festival in the community garden to celebrate the end of the fall season. We hold games and activities, provide snacks and refreshments, and create a great opportunity to enjoy the garden space, speak to some of our interns, speak with other offices, and meet new people. The date for 2024 is TBD.
The garden is a great place to relax, study, or hangout. Check out the native and non-native pollinator plants and the produce we grow to donate. We also have wifi access, making this a great spot to do your work in a beautiful outdoor space. If you or your club/organization are interested in holding an event or class in the garden, reach out to huminskis1@southernct.edu.
At the end of every Spring Semester, each residence hall is supplied with a donation bin for students to donate items to the Thrifty Owl and Food Pantry. Check out the Thrifty Owl page, Donation Guide for Move-out page, and check the information listed on the donation bins to find out what is and is not accepted. When donations exceed our capacity in the Thrifty Owl, we donate what we can to places in need around the New Haven area.
