The M.S. in Computer Science is a 30-credit hybrid program with evening classes for working professionals and career changers. Students choose one of three concentrations and finish with a thesis, a special project, or a comprehensive exam.
Concentrations
- Data Science: deep learning, computational intelligence, and applied statistics
- Cybersecurity: information security, network security, ethical hacking, and secure systems
- Software Development: algorithms, software engineering, and two advanced development courses
Full requirements for each concentration
Program Structure (30 credits)
| Component | Credits |
|---|---|
| Core: CSC 540 Database Systems, plus one programming course | 6 |
| Concentration: four required courses | 12 |
| Directed electives: two courses numbered CSC 520 or higher | 6 |
| Capstone | 6 |
Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to graduate.
Capstone Options
- Master's thesis (CSC 590 and CSC 591): original research with a faculty advisor.
- Special project (CSC 590 and CSC 595): a substantial applied project, often connected to the student's work, presented to the department.
- Comprehensive exam: two additional directed electives and a passing score on the comprehensive exam. No thesis or project is required.
Who Should Apply
The program is designed for students with a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. Students from other majors are welcome and first complete two bridge courses: CSC 501 Programming for Data Science and CSC 503 Computer Systems and Networking. Either course may instead be satisfied by an equivalent online credential such as a Coursera certificate; the graduate coordinator reviews each credential.
