New and Returning Students

All new and returning students (see definitions below) must meet with a member of the Academic Advising team before registering for their first semester of classes. Read below for information!

NEW Students:
Incoming freshman and transfer students who are enrolling at Southern for the first time. This also includes former Southern students who took 12 or more credits at another instution and are returning to Southern.

Former Southern students who have taken time away, voluntary or mandatory, and are returning to the University as matriculated students. This does not include former Southern students who took 12 or more credits at another instution and are returning to Southern. They would be considered NEW transfer students.

Welcome to Southern! As a new first-year student, you will meet with an Academic Advisor during New Student Orientation (NSO) to build your first semester course schedule. If you have not already done so, be sure to register for New Student Orientation (NSO).

There is no need to schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor. All you need to do is register for NSO and we'll take care of the rest!

If you are a new first-year student (freshman) who has not yet started their first semester and would like to change your major, please submit a New Student Major Change form.

If you are a new first-year student (freshman) who has not yet started their first semester and would like to request changes to your schedule, please submit a New Student Schedule Change Request.

Fall 2022

All new transfer students are required to schedule anadvising appointment where they will receive a registration PIN.

Once transfer students pay their admission deposit or confirm their enrollment, they will receive a link to the "Fall 2022 Transfer Student – Next Steps". The appointment system is available in Next Steps and will open on February 22nd. Advising appointments begin on March 7th for the Fall 2022 semester.

Transfer students are encouraged to schedule an advising appointment as soon as possible to take advantage of priority course registration and course availability. Transfer students who wait until August to act will have less appointment and course availability.

Students transferring from a foreign university should come prepared with course syllabi and descriptions and are encouraged to enroll even earlier as there is a multi-tiered credit evaluation process that must be complete to be advised appropriately.

New transfer student advising appointments will cover the following:

· Discuss how credits transferred and what requirements remain

· Review a pathway toward graduation

· Learn about important University resources

· Registration for first semester classes

Fall 2022 priority course registration opens on April 5th and is based on class standing.  You can check registration dates and times on the Registration website.
