New and Readmitted Students

All new and returning students (see definitions below) must meet with a member of the Academic Advising team before registering for their first semester of classes. Read below for information!

NEW Students:
Incoming freshman and transfer students who are enrolling at Southern for the first time. This also includes former Southern students who took 12 or more credits at another instution and are returning to Southern.

READMITTED Students:
Former Southern students who have taken time away, voluntary or mandatory, and are returning to the University as matriculated students. This does not include former Southern students who took 12 or more credits at another instution and are returning to Southern. They would be considered NEW transfer students.

Welcome to Southern! As a new first-year student, you will meet with an Academic Advisor during New Student Orientation (NSO) to build your first semester course schedule.  Click here for more information regarding New Student Orientation.

CHANGING YOUR MAJOR
If you are a new first-year student (freshman) who has not yet started their first semester and would like to change your major, please submit a New Student Major Change form.

CHANGING YOUR COURSE SCHEDULE
If you are a new first-year student (freshman) who has not yet started their first semester and would like to request changes to your schedule, please contact the Coordinator of First-Year Student Advising, Ben McNamee at mcnameeb1@southernct.edu

SPRING 2026 ADMISSIONS

New transfer students will receive a Welcome Email from Transfer Admissions after paying the admission deposit or confirming enrollment. This email includes your Next Steps for enrollment.  There is a 24-hour delay after submitting your admission deposit or confirmation before you can access the appointment scheduling system.

Registration Options

New transfer students can register for classes independently without an advising appointment or PIN.
However, meeting with an academic advisor is strongly recommended for personalized support, including:

  • Reviewing how transfer credits apply to your major
  • Clarifying remaining degree requirements
  • Creating a personalized graduation plan
  • Assisting with course selection and registration
  • Helping you secure the best available course options

Note: Registering on your own may result in selecting unnecessary or incorrect courses. For the best experience—especially for programs with separate admissions—we encourage transfers to schedule an advising appointment before registering.

All new transfer students should review these videos prior to their advising appointment and/or registering for classes:

·       How to Access and Read Your Degree Evaluation

·       How to Use Schedule Planner to Register for Classes (Add/Drop/Withdrawal)

Advising Appointments

New transfers seeking ad advising appointment should schedule as early as possible to ensure appointment and course availability. Students who wait until closer to the semester start date will have fewer options.

International transfer students should bring course syllabi and descriptions to their appointment and are encouraged to enroll early, as the credit evaluation process takes additional time.

For questions or help scheduling your advising appointment, email transferadvising@southernct.edu.

All returning matriculated students must meet with a Professional Advisor before scheduling courses for their first semester back.

Before scheduling your advising meeting, you must be readmitted to the University. To apply for readmission, you must submit the Readmission Application no later than 1 week prior to the start of the semester. Once you are officially readmitted, please follow the steps below to schedule your readmitted student advising meeting.

If you experience any issues when tring to schedule your advising meeting, please email advisement@southernct.edu.
