New Students

Are you a newly admitted first-year (freshman) or transfer student with questions/concerns about your first semester course schedule? Read below for information!

There is no need to schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor. All you need to do is register for NSO and we'll take care of the rest!

As an incoming first-year student, your first semester's course schedule is built by a member of our advising team! Your schedule is based on your major, English and Math placements, course availability, and the information you provided when you registered for NSO.

Once your schedule is created, you will receive an email from the academic advisor who built it. That email contains information on how to access your schedule, request a major change or schedule revision, and contact information for the advisor. Please review all of the information in that email.

IMPORTANT: If you notice that you have a course schedule but have not received an email, be sure to check both your Southern and person email accounts, as well as your SPAM folders. After checking those places, if you still don't have an email, please contact us at

Once you pay your admissions deposit through the Undergraduate Admissions Portal, you will be able to register for an academic advising appointment. During this appointment with an Academic Advisor, you will:

  • discuss how your credits transferred and what requirements remain

  • review a pathway toward graduation

  • learn about important University resources

  • register for your first semester classes

To schedule your academic advising appointment:
You must enter the Next Steps section of the Undergraduate Admissions Portal and click the "Academic Advising" tab (screenshot below). From there, follow the instructions for scheduling an appointment.
