Inclusivity On Campus

All-Gender Restrooms

For those who identify as transgender or non-binary, multi-stall, sex-segregated bathrooms have been a place of discrimination, harassment, fear, physical and emotional harm, and even arrest.

The university has designated all-gender restrooms on campus, which are restrooms designed for one occupant and increase access to a more inclusive option where individuals can meet their basic needs.
All-gender restrooms benefit many individuals seeking a single-occupant restroom, including those who identify as transgender or non-binary; those who are intersex; individuals who require privacy to maintain medical devices; those who need or provide assistance to others using the restroom; and families who need to accompany a child to the restroom.

If you are a student leader, administrator, or faculty member at the university, we encourage you to announce all-gender bathroom locations in proximity to your location at events and in your classes at the start of the semester.

Preferred Name

Utilizing an individual's chosen name is important in demonstrating respect for that person and in affirming their identity.

As such, Southern offers the preferred name option for students which will be displayed on course lists, degree evaluations, unofficial transcripts, Blackboard, and SCSU student email.

To submit a preferred name change via Banner Student:

  1. Login to MySCSU
  2. Click on Banner Student
  3. Click on Student Services
  4. Click on Student Records
  5. Click on Preferred First Name

Outlined below is additional information for faculty regarding chosen names:

  • On the first day of class, rather than reading from your course roster, ask students to introduce themselves and provide the name they would like you to call them. Be sure to write down this information and use the name that the student provides.
  • Some students may not be aware that the preferred name option exists, so it may be helpful to notify students in your syllabus on how to request their chosen name through Banner Student.
