The Director of Marketing and Publications directs the writing, editing, and production of University publications and marketing initiatives, and oversees the graphics and design studio in the Office of Public Affairs. Works with the Director of Public Affairs and staff to position the University in the community.

Position Responsibilities

Directs day-to-day activities of Public Affairs Office graphics and design studio, coordinates all production phases of publication, advertising, and marketing materials, from creative conception to delivery; ensuring that they are consistent with the branding image of the university.

Coordinates the writing, development, and placement of university advertising and related marketing initiatives, helping to develop unique themes that communicate Southern’s mission and programs to the general public.

Develops and maintains production schedules for print and related marketing projects and works with contracted printers to facilitate production, and ensure that specifications are met and deadlines honored. 

Serves as purchasing agent for printing, publication, and design services, including obtaining competitive pricing and working with the Purchasing Office to develop Requests for Proposals and quotations.

Keeps abreast of the latest marketing and publications trends - including the use of social and non-traditional media -and works with staff and the Director of Public Affairs to develop long-term plans and strategies for positioning the university to a broad constituency.

Oversees the University Website design and function as related to the branding and marketing of the University.

Provides writing and editing support for University and/or institutional reports and publications, along with special projects as assigned by the Director of Public Affairs.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of the responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred. At least seven years of experience in publication design and marketing within an academic or professional setting. Five years of supervisory or comparable experience. Extensive knowledge of marketing trends and branding initiatives, including the latest developments in social media. Experience with writing and editing for academic and/or marketing publications is a plus. Experience in developing themes and/or designing University view books, recruitment and registration brochures, and institutional and annual reports desirable. Familiarity with Macintosh desktop publishing experience preferred. Strong working knowledge of QuarkXpress and InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and related programs on a Macintosh platform desirable. These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
