Department Description

The Buley Library Access Services Department is the gateway to the library’s collections and services. We manage circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance while providing frontline support to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Our team ensures that library resources are accessible, policies are upheld, and patrons receive excellent service.

Position Summary

The University Assistant (Library Attendant) supports daily library operations by assisting patrons, monitoring library spaces, and ensuring a welcoming, service-oriented environment. The position serves as the first point of contact for visitors and provides basic assistance, while referring specialized questions or concerns to appropriate staff.

Position Description

  • Monitor general library use and direct policy-related inquiries to a supervisor.
  • Assist patrons in locating the appropriate service desk or library staff member.
  • Provide basic information and general assistance to library visitors.
  • Deliver excellent customer service at the library attendant service desk, in-person and by phone/email.
  • Assist patrons with locating printers and computers in the library; refer to the IT Helpdesk for technical issues.
  • Support the enforcement of library policies and contribute to a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support library operations.

Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic or educational setting is a plus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide courteous, professional, and effective customer service.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions, apply policies, and refer issues appropriately.
  • High School Diploma or higher

Hours

  • Schedule includes evenings and weekends.
