SCSU Athletics and Recreation

The SCSU Department of Athletics and Recreation is a NCAA Division II program, and a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. Consisting of 19 athletics teams, SCSU’s outstanding program continually ranks among the top NCAA Division II programs in the nation and boasts a long record of dominance in the Northeast for both team and individual championships. The Owls rank among the top 10 nationally with over 82 individual titles and 10 team championships. SCSU had NCAA Championship representation in over nine sports in 2023- 24 and also ranked among the top half of all Division II programs in the Learfield Sports Cup for the 20th straight year.

Southern Football

Southern Connecticut State University's football program is a storied tradition of gridiron excellence. As a proud member of the NCAA Division II Northeast-10 Conference, the program has thrived since its inaugural season in 1948. Recently, we celebrated our 75th anniversary with an impressive milestone: our 400th all-time win.

With five Eastern Football Conference Championships under our belt, including an unrivaled four consecutive titles from 1965 to 1968 and another in 1970, our competitive spirit remains unyielding. More recently, we've clinched the NE10 Championships in 2006 and 2009 and made four straight appearances in the NCAA Division II tournaments from 2005 through 2008.

Our program has been a launching pad for talent, producing numerous student-athletes and coaches who have made their mark in the National Football League and in the world. Since 1956, we've proudly featured 34 All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans, underscoring our commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

The Position

The Head Coach of Football has an amazing opportunity to build upon decades of excellence with SCSU Football.  Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Head Coach of Football provides vision and leadership for all aspects of the SCSU Football program, with a primary focus on developing a high-quality student-athlete experience. Consistent with the values of NCAA Division II, the head coach provides a competitive athletic experience while supporting the academic success and overall wellbeing of student-athletes.  Responsibilities also include recruiting, training, fiscal oversight, administrative duties, alumni engagement, fundraising, and community engagement activities. Working collaboratively with the Athletics and Recreation team, campus colleagues, alumni and other stakeholders, the head coach will maximize visibility for the athletics program to develop university spirit and pride.

This position is a full-time, 12-month contractual position.

Position Requirements

Master’s degree preferred and eight (8) years of appropriate professional level experience are required.  The head coach must demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to following the letter and spirit of NCAA, NE10 Conference and University rules and regulations. The head coach must exhibit an ability to effectively work with a diverse population of student-athletes and coaches in a cultural climate that celebrates diversity. The successful candidate will be required to complete the NCAA certification exam. These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
