Graduate Assistant - Social Work Department

Department:  Social Work
Term:  Fall 2024 & Spring 2025
Hours/Week:  20 for 15 weeks each semester (totaling 300 hours each semester)
Salary:  $5,280 stipend per semester plus a waiver of the University Fee; the University General Fee (except portion attributable to student accident insurance); and Student Activity Fee.

Position Summary

The Social Work GA works with social work faculty to create a supportive environment that allows BSW, MSW, and DSW students to reach their academic goals.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Communication:  GA is expected to be present and accessible to social work faculty and students.  This may include but is not limited to, handling departmental inquiries from students, professors, and the general public, as well as greeting guests, answering the SWK Dept. telephone and/or managing the SWK general email address. GA will also assist with departmental processes such as admissions and graduation-related activities.  GA will be responsible for drafting a monthly, tailored newsletter for each social work program (BSW, MSW, DSW), in collaboration with program coordinators. 
  • Student Support:  Provides information and support to students about campus resources that will support their success and self-care. Assists faculty advisors by distributing information to students about registration and curriculum. Listens to students’ concerns and triages to Coordinators, as needed.  Serve as staff liaison to social work student organizations as needed. 
  • Special Events:  Participates as part of team to organize program events. Handles event logistics such as room reservation, catering orders, and directions.
  • Miscellaneous:  Assists on additional projects as needed to support the BSW, MSW, and/or DSW Core or the department as a whole. 

Qualifications

Office experience preferred.  Applicants should have excellent computer and communication skills with proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experience with creating mass email communications (using SurveyMonkey or similar programs). 

Applicant must be a matriculated graduate student at SCSU and must be enrolled full-time (9 credits or more for each semester).  Applicant must satisfy other requirements outlined in the Academic Department Graduate Assistantship description in the Graduate Catalog.  Employment is contingent upon approval by the Office of Human Resources.
