CASAS takes a comprehensive, integrated approach to supporting the success of students and strives to create an open and inclusive environment for students to learn, succeed, and realize their goals. CASAS consists of four primary areas: Accessibility Services, Academic Support, Academic Coaching and Programming, and Academic Intervention. Accessibility Services staff work collaboratively with other CASAS staff and campus partners to enhance and promote opportunities for students with disabilities to thrive and be fully integrated into the Southern community.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Accessibility Services, the Accessibility Services Specialist assists in the delivery of a comprehensive, iterative process to coordinate supports and services for students with accessibility and other needs, which includes reviewing disability documentation, determining appropriate accommodations, andassisting in the collection and analysis of student performance data to improve student outcomes.
Position Responsibilities
- Maintains a caseload of students with disabilities and other academic needs. Reviews and analyzes supporting documentation and other information to evaluate individual student needs and determine eligibility for services and reasonable accommodations, and arranges classroom, testing, and other accommodations for qualified students.
- Provides support, advocacy, and awareness related to student accommodations and the promotion of universal design and a social model of disability. This includes monitoring students’ academic performance and progress, connecting them to other support resources on campus, and helping them practice and hone their self-advocacy and study skills.
- Works with faculty and staff to ensure appropriate accommodations are executed. Assists the Associate Director of Accessibility Services with the delivery of accommodations and supports through CASAS.
- Provides information and training to faculty, staff and administrators regarding institutional policies and procedures for ensuring an equitable experience for students. This includes information on procedures for navigating reasonable accommodations.
- Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates accessibility services’ student employees, university assistants, and other CASAS staff as necessary.
- Assists the Director of CASAS, the Associate Director of Accessibility Services, the Associate Director of Academic Support, and the Associate Director of Success Coaching and Programming in the development and delivery of supportive programs to assist students, including the ongoing collection and analysis of other program effectiveness data with an eye toward continuous improvement.
- Coordinates special projects and accessibility initiatives focusing on inclusion, enhancement, and compliance.
- May involve occasional work in the evenings and/or on weekends.
- Performs other duties related to those above, which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in higher education or related field (i.e., school/educational psychology, learning disabilities, counseling, or special education) and three (3) years of experience working with potentially at-risk students, particularly those with disabilities, in a higher educational setting. Proven understanding of potential barriers to access for students with disabilities and other potentially at-risk students; ability to make data-informed decisions; and demonstrated commitment to creating a just and inclusive community, intercultural competency, and enthusiasm for working at an institution committed to social justice.
Preferred Qualifications
Success developing and maintaining collaborative relationships; strong communication skills for effective oral and written communication with students, faculty, and parents; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to use computers/software; and a proven ability to work independently as well as contribute to the effectiveness of a cohesive team.
These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternative experiences.
