To help students who are struggling financially during the semester due to child care/babysitting expenses for their child(ren) under 12 years old, the SCSU Office of Student Affairs sponsors a Child Care Partial Reimbursement Program that offers a limit number of subsidies to eligible students.

United Way’s Early Head Start (EHS)
Infants and toddlers are given that chance through United Way’s Early Head Start (EHS) program. EHS is a federal to local program that provides child-development and family-centered services for low-income families in Hamden, West Haven, and New Haven.

Head Start and School Readiness Programs
Head Start is a federal program that offers free quality Pre-Kindergarten education for children from low-income families who live in New Haven. School Readiness is a state-funded Pre-K open to all New Haven residents with a sliding-scale fee.
If you are interested in enrolling in an NHPS Head Start or School Readiness program, registration will begin in April at our offices at 80 Hamilton Street. All registration will be by APPOINTMENT ONLY. To make an appointment, call 203-946-6950 or 203-946-6179.
Magnet School Pre-Kindergarten Programs
New Haven Public Schools also offers quality Pre-Kindergarten in some of our Magnet Schools. You are encouraged to attend the Open Houses and Magnet Fairs. To apply, download and mail in the application or apply online.

Shoreline Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting PAT Program
A free service for pregnant women in West Haven and East Haven.
The MIECHV trained staff understands:
- Parenthood is exciting and stressful.
- Families can benefit from extra support, especially during pregnancy.
- Immediate needs such as housing, transportation and food need to be addressed.
- A positive and nurturing environment is important for your family and baby’s health and development.
MIECHV’s home visitors provide:
- Weekly home visits
- Pregnancy and parenting information
- Developmental screenings
- Father guidance
- Monthly get-togethers
- Connections to resources in the community and access to baby supplies
Services are offered prenatal up to age 5.
Children whose families enroll in this program are more prepared for kindergarten.
