‘Owls Empowering Owls’ is a student-alumni engagement initiative housed in a collaboration within SCSU’s University Access Programs and the Office of Career and Professional Development. The initiative connects committed first-generation students or students from a low socioeconomic background to SCSU alumni who are passionate about giving back and guiding the next generation of scholars. By joining, alumni can be included in a directory that students may use to explore career paths, request guidance, or connect with professionals who were once in their shoes. Participation is fully optional, interest-based, and designed to be flexible for busy lives.
‘Owls Empowering Owls’ creates space for students to gain exposure to alumni who have pursued diverse careers and overcome challenges along the way. The initiative is flexible, student-centered, and low-barrier. Whether it leads to a single conversation or a longer-term connection, students gain access to the wisdom and insight of those who have been in similar positions.
This program supports student growth by:
Alumni who opt in will create a public profile using the Professional Network (ProNet) on Symplicity. From here, students will see a database of alumni active on the network, which allows them to search for and connect with alumni via their preferred method of contact. Once connected, students and alumni mutually choose how they would like to communicate, including email, video chat, phone calls, or in-person meetings. There are no required meeting frequencies or connections. The connection grows organically based on shared goals and comfort levels.
The program uses Symplicity ProNet to manage profiles, facilitate matching, and support communication. The platform allows:
All participants will receive a brief tutorial before the program begins to ensure they are comfortable using the system.
Any SCSU alumnus with professional experience can apply. We especially welcome those passionate about supporting first-generation, low-income students.
This is a voluntary opportunity. Alumni may receive university recognition and make a meaningful impact on a student’s journey. The time commitment depends on what the alumni and students agree upon. Potential involvement in panels or events is also an option.
Current undergraduate and graduate students at SCSU, particularly those from first-generation or low socioeconomic backgrounds, are eligible. As this initiative is in its pilot phase, students will be selected, and this will not yet be publicly available.
