After electricity use and heating/cooling in campus buildings, the largest portion of Southern's greenhouse gases results from transportation: official university travel and commuting. The university is working on making available several transportation solutions for members of the campus community.
R.I.D.E.S. (REDUCING INDIVIDUAL DANGERS AND ENCOURAGING SAFETY)
R.I.D.E.S is a program designed to offer students a responsible mode of transportation when one is needed. R.I.D.E.S. allows students to obtain their very own Metro Card assigned to their individual student ID number. Students can register for their card at the Drug and Alcohol Resource Center. Once registered, students may call any Metro Taxi in Connecticut at any time, and swipe their Metro Card to pay for the charge.
Shuttle Bus Services
In addition to on-campus shuttle services, Southern offers a free daily shuttle to and from Union Station in New Haven and weekend shuttle service to Hamden Plaza, Westfield Shopping Mall in Milford, and downtown New Haven.
Chartered Shuttle Services
Chartered shuttle service for group transportation is available through the University's contract with First Transit. Chartered shuttle service is to be used for official university business. Most times a completed travel authorization must be on file to support the chartered shuttle service. Some examples regarding the use of chartered shuttle service may include transporting students to/from the airport, to/from a field trip location (i.e. museum, theatre, etc.) or to/from an athletic event.
