Here you can find a variety of resources to help you as a commuter student as you navigate your way through university life. This site will be updated regularly with events, activities and services provided to our commuter students. Some of the resources you will find located on the Commuter Services site are train and bus schedules, frequently asked questions, parking and meal plan information and tips from some of our most seasoned and involved commuter student leaders.
Commuter Commission
The commuter committee meets every Wednesday at 1:00 pm in room 301 of the Adanti Student Center. The committee is open to any students looking to take initiative and get involved in helping Southern provide support to commuter students. We also invite students to attend committee meetings to share input on how the commission can better tend to commuter student issues.

The Southern Connecticut State University Commuter Commission seeks to enrich, engage and support our commuter student population by offering innovative programming, advocating on behalf of commuter specific concerns, acting as a connective support network, and enhancing resources available to commuter students.

Commute for Free
The U-Pass (CT) is a special transportation pass for full-time undergraduate Southern students and is valid for unlimited trips during the fall and spring semesters. Students can ride CTTRANSIT buses, Shoreline East and Metro North trains in CT, the CT Fastrak buses, and many smaller transit lines all over the state with no out-of-pocket expense. Pick up your U-Pass at the Card Office in the Wintergreen Building. If you have any questions, please contact either the Card Office or Sustainability Office.
Tips from Commuters
To make the best of your college experience as a commuter, here are a few helpful suggestions:
- Leave home with plenty of time to get to class!
- Get involved on campus! Join a club, student organization, or intramural team.
- Join the gym and participate in fitness classes on campus!
- Take advantage of the free resources on campus such as the library, computer labs, Center for Academic Success and Accessibility Services, Counseling Services, and more!
- Read the Southern News newspaper to hear about issues pertaining to students and special upcoming events!
- Check out the Game Room on the Plaza Level of the Adanti Student Center!
- Relax between classes in the Commuter Lounge (ASC room 215) or the Fireplace Lounge on the 3rd floor!
- Check out fliers, bulletin boards, or the SCSU website for upcoming events. Events are open to all students!
- Feel free to dine on campus in Conn Hall, the Student Center Food Court, the Bagel Wagon or any other food station. Meal plans can be found here.
- Don’t forget to pick up some SCSU swag at the Campus Bookstore!
FAQ
Who is considered a commuter student at Southern?
A commuter student is anyone who does not reside in any of the on campus residential halls.
Where can I find The Union Shuttle Bus?
If you are interested in taking the Southern Shuttle to Union Station, you can meet the shuttle at the bus stop in LOT 2. (This is the parking lot between Engleman and Morrill Hall.)
Where can I get a free CT Transit bus pass?
Southern provides a free UPASS to any full-time undergraduate Southern student. The UPASS can be obtained at the HootLoot Office in the Wintergreen building.

Where can I obtain my parking pass?
Students can receive a parking pass from the Police Department or the Card Office, ASC324, and the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development, ASC212.
Persons seeking a decal must present a current and VALID STUDENT ID card (Hoot Loot card). Students must know the make, model, year, color and license plate of their vehicle.
**Please note that all vehicles operated or parked on campus at any time must properly display an SCSU parking decal. Vehicle owners and operators must register their vehicles at the University Police Department.
Where are the student parking lots?
Commuter Student Parking Lots are located in lots #3, #8, #9. Also, the Wintergreen Avenue and West Campus parking garages and Levels 2, 3, and 4 of the Fitch Street parking garage. Students may not park in faculty/staff areas.

How do I get involved?
If you are interested in getting involved, consider stopping by The Office of Student Life! Student Life is located in the Adanti Student Center Room 213. Also be sure to keep an eye out for posters and promotions located across campus. Campus wide events are open to all SCSU students!
How will I know if classes are cancelled due to inclement weather?

Where can I store my belongings while on campus?
The Adanti Student Center provides lockers to students free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis each semester. Lockers are signed out on the first day of classes each semester in the Main Office of the Adanti Student Center room 325.
You are required to have both your S.C.S.U. Student ID Card and a lock to immediately place onto the locker, without those we cannot assign you a locker. If you do not have a lock the Campus Bookstore should have them for sale.
Is there anywhere Commuter Students can go to hang out or relax?
Yes! The second floor of the Adanti Student Center has a Commuter Lounge designed just for commuters! There is a microwave, TV and charging station for student use in the space, in addition to tables and couches for relaxing! Commuter students can also utilize Buley Library, the Fireplace Lounge and other campus spaces!
Will someone escort me to my car?
University Police offers an on-campus escort service 24 hours a day for your safety. Simply call the University Police Department at 392-5375, state your name, location, and destination, and, as long as your route is on university property, an officer or a student campus watch assistant will accompany you.
