Southern a Fulbright Top Producing Institution in 2024-25

February 25, 2025

Dear Southern Community,

It is with immense pride that I share another recognition of excellence for our university! Southern has been recognized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as a top-producing institution for the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program for the 2024-25 academic year.

Southern has been honored with four Fulbright placements this year. Dr. Kelly Mabry (Communication Disorders), Dr. Radu Bogdan Zamfir (Center for Educational and Assistive Technology), and Dr. Amy Smoyer (Social Work) are engaged in Croatia, Romania and Spain, respectively. In addition, we are hosting – for the second time – Dr. Cristina Alsina Risquez, a Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Universitat de Barcelona.

This recognition, alongside our recent Carnegie Research 2 (R2) designation, underscores Southern’s growing reputation as a leader in research and innovation. It affirms our commitment to providing students with transformative, hands-on learning experiences and global engagement opportunities that prepare them for success in an interconnected world.

Please join me in congratulating our Fulbright recipients and celebrating yet another outstanding milestone for our university. Their work not only enhances our international presence but also enriches our students’ learning experiences right here on campus.
