From the President, Re: Reaffirming our Commitment to Community, Respect

November 7, 2024

Dear Southern Community:

After waking yesterday to this year’s election results, I reflected on how this moment impacts our university—a community as diverse as it is passionate. Now feels like the right time to reaffirm our commitment to civil discourse with every member of Southern, regardless of political beliefs. The results of an election should not change who we are as individuals or as a university, nor should it change how we treat one another.

In times like these, it’s essential that we pause, reflect, listen, and engage in dialogue that fosters understanding rather than judgment. This is a complex historical moment. We can only move forward together. Our dedication to lifelong learning, building strong communities, and leaving the world better than we found it is at the heart of Southern's mission. For more than 130 years, we have broken down barriers to equity and access, and that work is as vital today as ever. What we do in our classrooms and communities ultimately shapes our future.

In the coming days, we’ll provide spaces for gathering and reflection as we consider what this moment means for each of us, and we encourage you to take time for personal reflection as well. Please remember support is available – you are not alone. Counseling Services and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are here to help scholars process and navigate these times, while our  Employee Assistance Program is available to support faculty and staff. Residential scholars are encouraged to reach out to their RA, Hall Director, or the RA on duty. And, as always, our University Police are dedicated to keeping our campus safe and secure.

Let me be clear: Southern will always stand for justice, equity, and the utmost respect for all humans. Together, we will address issues, and we will do so with intention and integrity. Southern is more than just a university; we are a community that embodies strength and compassion. Let us lead the way by example, modeling our commitment to justice, inclusion, and respect.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dwayne Smith
Interim President
