From the President, re: New Federal Directives
January 29, 2025
Dear Southern Community,
As you are aware, the first days of the new federal administration have resulted in a flurry of executive orders and other actions that may impact higher education and our extended community. Understandably, there are many among us who are deeply concerned about what the immediate future may hold for themselves and their loved ones.
Most recently, for example, the White House announced Tuesday that federal grants and loans would be paused, pending review to ensure compliance with the new federal directives. The administration has also indicated that federal assistance to individuals, including student loans and Pell grants, will not be affected.
As events continue to unfold, I want to reaffirm that Southern remains committed to its social justice-driven mission of access, equity and opportunity. And as part of this mission we will continue to strive to ensure that we maintain a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
Many questions have already been asked about potential immigration enforcement on campus. Earlier this week, the CSCU System released new protocols to be followed in such an eventuality.
It is important to note that under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, all scholars are entitled to privacy, regardless of immigration status. We shall continue to uphold FERPA and deny requests for scholar information that are not accompanied by a valid court order or subpoena. University Police will not inquire about an individual’s immigration status nor detain or arrest anyone on the basis of immigration status.
On our website for undocumented students you will find FAQs that offer further guidance, as well as a comprehensive listing of campus and community organizations that support immigrant and undocumented scholars and others. For those who have concerns about the implications of immigration enforcement, Governor Lamont’s family preparedness plan provides information on immigration legal help and other resources.
In conjunction with the CSCU System Office and other entities, we will continue to monitor this developing situation. As I receive more pertinent information, I will share it with you through email and a web page that will be created for this purpose. Again, be assured that the well-being, safety and individual success of our scholars, faculty and staff remain of paramount importance during these challenging times.
Sincerely,
Dr. Dwayne Smith
Interim President
