From the President: re: Election Day
November 4, 2024
Dear Southern Community,
As we approach election day, I want to take a moment to recognize the diversity of perspectives within our university and the shared values that unite us. Voting is one of our most fundamental democratic rights as Americans, giving each of us a voice in shaping the future. It represents the opportunity to reflect on our most deeply held values and envision a world we wish to leave for future generations. For this reason, elections are also a time of heightened emotion and opinion, and it’s important to be thoughtful about how we engage in political discussions.
At Southern, we are committed to maintaining a community where everyone feels respected and valued. The open, peaceful exchange of ideas is at the heart of our educational mission, and it is strengthened when we approach each other with kindness, empathy, and understanding—even when we disagree.
The path to election day has been a stressful one due to the many divisive issues that currently confront us. If you're feeling overwhelmed, reach out and talk with someone you trust. Visit JED’s Election Stress Resources, connect with Counseling Services or the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for student support, or engage the Employee Assistance Program for faculty and staff assistance. Residential students should contact their RA, the RA on duty, or their Hall Director should they need additional support. Pre – and post-election, University Police will be working to ensure our campus remains safe and secure, following the protocols outlined in our Emergency Preparedness Plan.
As a university community, we have a shared responsibility to stay informed, engage respectfully, and—most importantly—make our voices heard by voting. Let’s approach this election with the same integrity, compassion, and commitment to community that define us every day, and lead the way by setting an example for others to follow.
Sincerely,
Dr. D.
Dwayne Smith
Interim President
