From the President, re: Conflict in the Middle East

October 11, 2023

Dear Southern Community,

The outbreak of deadly violence and the subsequent loss of many innocent lives in Israel and Gaza are yet another tragic reminder of the fragility of peace in our world. As the conflict escalates, we open our hearts to those directly impacted by the bloodshed and to the members of our own Southern family who may be hurting and fearing for the safety of loved ones far away.

On campus, these grave events remind us to reinforce our social justice values by displaying compassion and care for all members of our extended community. We can also take steps to promote inclusion and understanding at Southern and beyond.

In this spirit, our DEI Division is working with SCSU Hillel, the Muslim Student Association, the Multicultural Council, the Interfaith Center and the Student Government Association to plan a peace rally and teach-ins about the deep-rooted complexities of the conflict in the coming days.   For those who may need support during this difficult time, Counseling Services are available for scholars, as well the Employee Assistance Program for faculty and staff.

In closing, I ask that you remain vigilant of our institution's social justice mission, both in the way you view the larger world and in your interactions with others.  Thank you for your continued support and solidarity with each other as this crisis unfolds.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dwayne Smith
Interim President
