The Passing of Tim Quill, Head Coach for Swimming and Diving

February 11, 2026

Dear Southern Community,

It is with profound sadness that I share the sudden passing of Tim Quill, our longtime head coach of men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

For nearly three decades, Tim devoted his life to the sport he loved and to the students he mentored. He built one of the most successful athletic programs in Southern Connecticut State University history and in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Those who knew Tim understood that he was, above all, a husband and father, a mentor and a teacher. He offered a steady, compassionate presence in the lives of generations of student-athletes – from the Cheshire YMCA and SoNoCo swim clubs to his 34 conference championship teams at Southern. Tim inspired excellence and pride wherever he went.

Our hearts are with Tim’s family, who are very much a part of our Southern family. His daughter, Lily, competes on our track and field team, and both she and her brother, Tim, are first-year students. He was immensely proud to have his children here at Southern.

In moments like these, I am deeply grateful for our caring, close-knit university community. Counseling and support services will be available to students, faculty, and staff in the coming days. Additional details, including funeral arrangements, will be provided as they become available.

Please keep Tim’s family, his student-athletes, and the many colleagues who had the privilege of working alongside him in your thoughts during this unexpected and difficult time.

Sincerely,

Sandy
