A Message from Dr. Sandra Bulmer
June 9, 2025
Dear Southern Community,
It is with a profound sense of purpose and enthusiasm that I write to you today as the newly appointed interim president of Southern Connecticut State University. Many of us have worked together through important moments in recent years, and I am honored by the opportunity to step up and serve our institution during this pivotal time.
Southern has long been known to our community as a haven for access, opportunity, and transformation. In recent years, we have made meaningful progress in aligning our mission with the evolving needs of our students and the broader community. From deepening our workforce partnerships to expanding academic pathways and research opportunities, our shared commitment to student success is stronger than ever—and we are well-positioned to build on this foundation with vision and determination.
As I step into this role, I do so with deep gratitude for the work that has brought us to this moment. I want to thank Dr. Dwayne Smith for his leadership in elevating Southern’s research profile as an R2 institution, expanding enrollment, and fostering strong community engagement. I am also grateful to Dr. Julia Irwin, whose steady guidance, academic excellence, and grace have served our university so well during her time as interim provost. Dr. Irwin has generously agreed to continue in this role for two additional years, providing us all with an important degree of continuity and leadership as we continue on our positive trajectory. We have real momentum—and it is all thanks to you: the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners who make up our Southern family.
Drawing on my own experience in an area with pressing workforce needs, I understand the importance of being responsive, forward-thinking, and unhesitating in our mission. Together, we will assess where we are, identify where we can grow, and ensure that our impact—both locally and beyond—is lasting and meaningful.
Thank you for the work you do every day to lift up this community. I am excited to move forward with you, and I look forward to the conversations ahead when I begin, July 1.
Sincerely,
Sandra Bulmer, Ph.D.
