Accommodations: Observance of Religious Days

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Throughout the academic year, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff observe significant religious, cultural, and identity-based traditions that may shape their daily activities and engagement on campus. These observances are part of the diverse experiences and perspectives that enrich our classrooms, workplaces, and broader university community.

Southern Connecticut State University’s mission affirms our commitment to an educational and work environment in which individuals from all backgrounds are respected and valued for the diverse talents, insights, and perspectives they contribute.

Guidance for Students

As we begin the fall semester, we want to remind faculty and staff of a Connecticut state statute addressing student absences due to religious beliefs. {Section 10a-50 of the Connecticut General Statutes] provides that students who are unable to attend class, participate in an examination, or fulfill study or work requirements because the tenets of their religion prohibit secular activity on a particular day or at a particular time must be excused and may not experience adverse or prejudicial effects because of their absence.

The statute also requires faculty and the university to provide students with an equivalent opportunity to make up missed examinations, work, or study assignments. During days of religious observance, students should not be required to complete assignments or take examinations or quizzes.

Guidance for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff with religious obligations should refer to the Employee Handbook or their applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement for information regarding accommodations for religious observances.

Managers and supervisors are asked to work with employees to understand how religious observances may affect their work responsibilities and, where appropriate, develop plans that balance individual needs with university operations. Faculty and staff may direct questions to the Office of Human Resources.
