Academic Placement for New Transfer Students

The following information applies to both full-time and part-time transfer students.

Transfer students may not use scores on standardized college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT scores or high school grades for English or Mathematics placement.

Southern requires all undergraduate students to complete an English composition course (ENG 112). If you transferred in the equivalent of ENG 112, you have fulfilled this requirement.  If you transferred in the equivalent of ENG 110, you will be placed into ENG 112. Otherwise, your English placement will be based on the following guidelines:

  1. If your overall transfer GPA is 2.49 or lower, you will be placed in ENG 110 or you may take the English placement.
  2. If your overall transfer GPA is 2.49 or lower and you have transferred in an ENG Elective, you must take the English placement.
  3. If your overall transfer GPA is 2.5 or higher and you have NOT transferred in any ENG courses, you must take the English placement.
  4. If your overall transfer GPA is 2.5 or higher and you have transferred in an ENG Elective, you will be placed into ENG 112.

(1) Your chosen major may require a certain class from your list of eligible courses. Please consult an advisor if you are unsure which one is right for you.

(2) MAT 139 transfer credit also qualifies you for MAT 300 and MAT 178 (as long as the CSC/DSC requirement is also met).

If you have taken math classes at another college or university but they have not transferred as above, it may still be possible to use those courses for math placement. Contact the math department chair
at math.chair@southernct.edu for information on how to do this.

Please use the following guidelines to decide whether you should take the math placement assessment.

  • Transfer students who have not taken any college or university level mathematics courses and have not earned college credit through equivalency testing such as AP, IB, CLEP, or DSST must complete the math placement assessment.
  • Transfer students with transfer credit for MAT 103, MAT 105, or MAT 107 must complete the math placement assessment if a higher level course is needed for their major.
  • Transfer students with transfer credit for MAT 095, MAT 100, MAT 106, MAT 108, MAT 112, MAT 120, MAT 122, or MAT 125 may opt to take the math placement assessment if they feel that their placement level as established by their transfer credit is not reflective of their current mathematical ability.
  • Transfer students with transfer credit for MAT 139 or higher should contact the math department chairperson at math.chair@southernct.edu if they have any questions about their math placement level.
