IRS Data Retrieval

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool should be available within 2 to 3 weeks of filing electronically, and 6 to 8 weeks of filing a paper tax return. If you have not filed your tax return, you cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

  1. Go to  https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.
  2. Click Login
  3. Enter name, Social Security Number and date of birth, and click Next
  4. Click Make FAFSA Corrections
  5. Enter your FSA User ID and the password you created when you filed your FAFSA, click Next
  6. Click Financial Information
  7. This brings you to the Parent Tax Information section. If your parents have filed their tax return, select Already Completed from the drop down menu.
  8. Read the information. If you can answer “No” to all of the questions, enter the Parent’s FSA User ID and click Link to IRS to navigate to the IRS website
  9. Click OK to leave the FAFSA website
  10. Enter all of the information exactly as it appears on the tax return and click Submit
  11. If the IRS can validate your parents’ identification, the IRS tax information will display
  12. Click Transfer Now and return to the FAFSA website using the links
  13. If you filed a tax return, proceed to the Student Tax Information section
  14. Repeat the steps
  15. Continue to the Sign and Submit section and click Submit My FAFSA Now to submit the corrections.

  11. If the IRS can validate your identification, the IRS tax information will display
  12. Click Transfer Now and return to the FAFSA website using the links
  13. Continue to the Sign and Submit section and click Submit My FAFSA Now to submit the corrections.
