Reporting to the Associate Chief lnformation Officer (ACIO), the Director of IT Strategic Initiatives & Special Projects is responsible for a range of activities including project planning, policy development, research, data collection and analysis, report preparation, and coordination. The Director works effectively with all university offices. The incumbent will be responsible for a wide range of essential initiatives and special projects in support of the plans, deployments/implementations, and delivered solutions from IT to the University.

  
Position Responsibilities:

Oversees and coordinates projects designated by the ACIO to be of value to the IT organization, including but not limited to design, development, testing, documentation, and timely completion of designated projects.

Troubleshoots IT and service quality/experience-related issues and makes recommendations to the ACIO to resolve IT problem areas.

Formulates a strategy for IT to develop and support the use of social media, commoditized solutions, and similar technologies to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff. This may involve working with other divisions that are developing similar strategies relating to the use of social media on campus.

Acts as a liaison between selected departments and IT in the development of projects and processes designed to enhance teaching and learning, university operations, and the student and faculty experience.

Oversees or assists with special projects as assigned.

Prepares reports as requested for the Chief lnformation Officer (CIO), ACIO, and university leaders.

Actively monitors the overall quality of the user experience at Southern and continually recommends improvements/enhancements.

Researches, reviews, and tests new and emerging technologies and makes recommendations for adoption/implementation.

Manages transitions, deployments, and communications as appropriate. 

Manages strategic and tactical initiatives related to IT.

Recommends policies and procedures necessary to enhance IT-related operations.

Works with the university to create reliable and innovative technical solutions in support of the University's mission and strategic plan.

Represents the department at appropriate functions, meetings, and committees, as directed.

Communicates and coordinates with all levels of university community and develops and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.

Under direction of the ACIO, prepares project plans, budgets, and objectives to facilitate the systems and applications functions; develops and recommends pertinent policies.

Participates in development of release plans and user training plans. Partners with vendors to plan implementation of new technologies.

Manages user and vendor relationships. 

Supervises staff as assigned.

Performs other duties related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of the responsibility of the position.
   
Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution supplemented by a minimum of six (6) years of related experience is required. Master's degree preferred. These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
