Pep Band Director

Position Description

The Music Department at Southern Connecticut State University is seeking a Director for the newly-formed Pep Band at SCSU. The Pep Band is a collaboration between the Music Department and SCSU Athletics.

Position Duties

  • Assist with the recruitment of current and prospective SCSU students to play in the Pep Band
  • Assist with directing weekly rehearsals prior to and during the basketball season (September-March), on-campus
  • Assist with the directing performances of the Pep Band at all in-conference home basketball games
  • Work with the Music Department chairperson and applied lesson coordinator on logistical and musical needs for the group

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Music, or related field
  • Experience playing in or directing musical ensembles (marching band, pep band, concert band, rock ensemble)
  • Ability to communicate clearly with SCSU current and prospective students, faculty, and staff in e-mail, phone, and in-person formats
  • Interest and ability to serve as the public face of the Pep Band in recruiting for and directing the ensemble

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in conducting, or related field
  • 3 years’ experience directing pep bands or similar ensembles (marching band)
  • Experience in college-level music education, including in recruiting and building new programs and/or ensembles
