Hours/Week: 20 hours a week
The Graduate Assistant (GA) for the School of Nursing must be a 2nd year or Advanced Standing MSW student who is ready and eager to support nursing students in a unique capacity. With the direct support of the Student Engagement Specialist and an off-site Clinical Supervisor for social work internship requirements, the GA will work with nursing students individually and in groups to support their educational experiences. The Graduate Assistant will assist in various operational tasks including documentation of counseling sessions, referrals, and interventions with the nursing students.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist with the delivery of social/emotional support to nursing students.
- Create a safe space that encourages nursing students to seek support.
- Provide direct support for students in the nursing program and resources provided by the Department of Social Work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be an enrolled, matriculated SCSU MSW student at the time of employment.
- Advanced Standing MSW one-year students or 2nd year MSW students
- Must maintain a 3.0 GPA for continued employment spring semester
- Must not have another university-supported paid position
- Must have availability for a regular 20 hour/week schedule on campus during the fall and spring semesters.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Description of Tasks
- Collaborate with the Student Engagement Specialist by providing students support with their overall well-being
- Evaluate students individually to identify their needs, challenges, circumstances, and strengths
- Assess each student and create individual action plans
- Provide students, faculty, and staff with appropriate resources on and off campus
- Organize and implement programming centered on self-care and academic performance for students
- Document interactions with students within Navigate
- Facilitate a mutual aid group to support nursing students and connect them together
- Effective and timely communication with students, faculty, and staff
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Student Engagement Specialist
Schedule/Compensation
- Full-time Graduate Assistant: $4,800.00 per semester (300 hours/15 weeks), must be full-time, 9 credits per semester (all credits must be part of the student’s approved plan of study for graduate study)
- A set in-person work schedule is created with the supervisor upon employment.
- The position may have the opportunity for working hours during university breaks.
Additional Information
- The following fees will be waived for both full-time and half-time Graduate Assistants: University Fee; University General Fee, except for that portion attributable to student accident insurance; and the Student Activity Fee. The usual waiver policy for health insurance applies. It should be noted that a half-time Graduate Assistant who is a part-time student is not assessed these fees. Part-time Graduate Assistants are responsible for paying the General University Fee.
- Graduate Assistantships are not a waiver of University tuition. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for payment of in/out of state tuition as determined by their eligibility. The Graduate Assistant receives a bi-weekly stipend through student payroll with appropriate taxes and withholdings.
