Graduate Assistant – Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders (Counseling Focused)

Position Summary

The Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders (CEASD) is seeking an organized, responsible, and flexible graduate student to support students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as they begin their college experience at Southern Connecticut State University in a college bound transition program with Fairfield Public Schools.

The Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders at SCSU was established in 2010.  Through research, education, and partnerships, the Centers’ mission is to build capacity in our schools, higher education institutions, vocational settings, and broader communities to enhance the outcomes of individuals with ASD of all ages.

Responsibilities

The Graduate Assistant for the Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders will work in collaboration with Center staff to:

  • Lead structured weekly counseling groups focused on skills such as self-advocacy, social communication, interpersonal relationships, and other social/emotional skills identified by the students and/or staff in this innovative program. 
  • When necessary, meet individually with students in the program to support them with academic, social/emotional, and communication challenges they might experience in the college environment.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders in the transition program to ensure that the enrolled students have a positive, successful college experience at SCSU.
  • Assist with general office administrative tasks as assigned, such as compiling reports, organizing documents, making copies, responding to inquiries, etc.
  • Assist with other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must have strong computer, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a matriculated graduate student at Southern Connecticut State University with full-time status.
  • Must have or maintain 3.0 GPA for continued employment.
  • Must not have another university-supported paid position.
  • Experience working with individuals with ASD or other developmental disabilities is preferable.
  • Degree program in an area of study related to the field of counseling, school psychology, social work, and psychology is a plus.
  • Must have availability for a 10 hour/week schedule during the fall and spring semesters.

Work Environment

  • The Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders is located in the Education Centers Building across from Davis Hall.  Office space is available for the completion of administrative tasks.  A classroom and an informal study/lounge area are available for use by the students and staff associated with the transition program.
