Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks candidates for a Counselor to join our Counseling Services team. It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System. The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.
A part of the Division of Student Affairs, the SCSU Counseling Center supports the anti-racism and social justice mission of the university and is committed to growing the multicultural competence and ethnic and racial diversity of the counseling center staff. The goal for this position is to better understand the lived experiences of students from underrepresented populations and be more accessible and relatable to students from marginalized groups. We are particularly interested in hiring an individual with knowledge and experience of working with diverse students populations, including BIPOC students, students who identify as LGBTQIA+, students from low income backgrounds, undocumented students, first-generation college students, and/or international students.
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Counseling Services and the Associate Dean of Counseling Services and Wellbeing, the counselor will provide direct culturally responsive and identity-informed psychotherapy to students with diverse clinical concerns within a time-limited treatment model. The counselor provides initial triage and intake assessments, group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, assessments regarding danger to self or others, referrals, outreach, psychoeducational workshops, and consultation.
This position may require some evening or weekend hours.
Qualifications
Candidates for this position must have a master’s degree in counseling, social work, or related field, or a doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology and be currently licensed as a mental health provider by the State of Connecticut. A minimum of three years of experience in direct service is required. The successful candidate will be an active team member who is strong holistic and developmentally oriented practitioner with solid experience in the promotion of wellness and life skills within post-secondary populations. They will share Southern’s commitment to anti-racism and social justice.
Preferred experiences of the candidate include:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the lived experience BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ young adults or students, particularly in predominantly white institutions.
- Experience providing culturally proficient clinical services to diverse and underrepresented populations, reflecting an understanding of the ways in which race, ethnic identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, privilege, and oppression affect therapeutic service delivery.
- Experience providing time-limited counseling, mental health crisis assessment, and group counseling.
- Spanish speaking.
- Five or more years’ experience providing psychological services in a university counseling center.
