Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a talented leader to serve as the Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development. The Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development has primary responsibility for overseeing the external relations and employer engagement strategy of the office. The Assistant Director works creatively to build pathways of engagement for employer development and sustained, longitudinal employer retention to provide career opportunities in public, non-profit and business sectors to undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni. Additionally, the Assistant Director works closely with Institutional Advancement colleagues to develop and engage in a comprehensive career development plan for engaging alumni career development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years of full-time, relevant, professional-level experience
  • Working knowledge of best practices in external relations
  • Direct experience working successfully with diverse populations, demonstrating multicultural competence, and a commitment to working at a university with a mission for social justice and anti-racism
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in event planning
  • Demonstrated success in roles that required setting priorities and managing deadlines
  • Highly effective at working collaboratively with others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business, education, psychology, communication, or related field
  • Four years or working in external relations, alumni engagement, or career services
  • Strong working knowledge of career coaching techniques, career decision making, and career competencies
  • Experience in large-scale event planning
  • Ability to work in a complex, fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Knowledge of current trends in social media.

These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.

Essential Functions

Manages the external relations culture for the office. Collaborates with the Associate Dean of Career and Student Success for the development, administration, and execution of a university-wide external engagement strategy for undergraduate and graduate students. Develops and monitors an external relations advisory board for the office. Develops connection opportunities for university stakeholders to engage in external relations dialogue.

Leads a comprehensive employer engagement program and strategy for the office. Develops a portfolio of opportunities for employers, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and other related establishments to engage students, faculty, staff, and alumni of SCSU. Conducts employer outreach and development strategies to cultivate and maintain relationships with employers and enhance employer presence on campus. Develop opportunities for employers and organizations to create a sustained recruiting or engagement relationship with the office. Works with employers on workplace inclusion practices consistent with SCSU’s mission as a social justice and anti-racist university. Compiles and reports data on employer relations activities and conducts related annual assessment and evaluation procedures for institutional reporting.

Serves as the primary contact and facilitator for large-scale, year-round career fair programming. Collaborates with the Office of Integrated Marketing and Communication in the development and production of marketing materials. Manages all employer communication, registration, and engagement strategy components of all career fairs. Conducts profit and loss analysis and provides recommendations to the Associate Dean for future events.

Researches and develops opportunities to incorporate alumni with both short-term and long-term career engagement opportunities to serve current Southern students. Works collaboratively with the Office of Alumni Relations to develop a university-sponsored alumni mentoring program. Co-develops the curricular approach of a mentorship program serving undergraduate and graduate students in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations. Supports the Office of Alumni Relations in the recruitment, screening, and selection of alumni mentors. Manages the programmatic function of the mentoring program.

Works collaboratively with the Office of Alumni Relations to develop an alumni career engagement strategy. Develops innovative approaches to serving alumni across the life span (e.g., early career alumni, career transitions, etc.).

Plans, implements, and conducts workshops, presentations, and programs to educate and inform Southern alumni surrounding a variety of career development topics. Serves as a career coach for early career alumni who graduated within the past three years. Researches and stays informed in national, state and local hiring practices, employment trends, and other labor-related issues.

Serves as an academic, career and profession/industry specialist in the majors represented by one of SCSU’s schools (e.g., Arts and Sciences, Business, Health and Human Services, Education). Meets regularly with academic departments and employers in these majors to understand pathways from majors to careers; helps with internship development and experiential learning opportunities; provides employment lens for student preparation during college for a future job in those professions/industries. Researches and stays informed in national, state and local hiring practices, employment trends, and other labor-related issues for careers in these majors.

May supervise undergraduate and/or graduate student employees.
Optimizes the use of the career services platform to enhance student engagement in their career readiness journey.

Assists with major departmental events and the department’s career resources. Collaborates in the development of the departmental calendar of activities, programs, and events.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.
