June 2, 2021
With June 1 marking the start of a gradual return to the office for Southern employees, here are the latest guidelines from the state Department of Administrative Services about social distancing in the workplace. These guidelines will be in effect through August 1, 2021, when full on-campus activities will resume.
Inside buildings, masks must be worn at all times, except in settings where employees are working alone in offices or raised cubicles that are a minimum of six feet away from the next workspace.
Employees must wear a mask in all common areas from the time they enter the building until the time they arrive at their workstation and at any time they are leaving their workstation and moving around common areas (i.e., in hallways and stairwells, going to the restroom or break room, etc.).
Employees working in congregate settings (i.e., open offices without appropriately sized cubicle walls, shared offices, or similar settings) shall wear a mask at all times unless they are able to maintain six feet of separation from others.
Virtual meetings are still encouraged as a safer alternative to conference rooms.
Continuous wearing of masks is not required in outdoor workspaces where employees do not regularly come within six feet of coworkers. However, employees should have a mask with them even outdoors if they must enter buildings or are going to be working near others.
If you are walking across campus you are encouraged to wear a mask but do not have to do so unless you are not vaccinated.
Compliance with these rules by all employees remains mandatory as there is currently no convenient or reliable way to determine who is or is not fully vaccinated.
With a full return to campus scheduled for August 1, 2021, employees are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible to keep themselves, their families, and their coworkers as safe as possible when they return to the office.

Thanks in advance for playing your part in maintaining the continued health and safety of our campus community.
