Web Conferencing Security Warning

April 1, 2020

Earlier this week, the FBI Boston division released a warning regarding “teleconference hijacking.” The FBI has applied this label to web conferences that were disrupted by “pornographic and/or hate images and threatening language.” As we have shifted to using web conferencing for online classrooms and remote learning, it is important to be aware of emerging security and privacy concerns on the use of the related platforms. Below is a link to the FBI press release with additional information about the warning.

As a reminder, please use only the following supported platforms for online conferencing: Microsoft Teams & WebEx. Microsoft Teams will allow authenticated Southern accounts to join and places guests within a separate lobby. WebEx Meetings limit the access to the meeting by having a password enabled by default and the host can control who can share content with the group.

Please be wary of offers and tools that are not officially supported by SCSU or CSCU. Though many of the offers may seem sincere and desirable, using them may lead to additional security and privacy risks.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter,

SCSU IT Department
