Hurricane Henri is projected to bring heavy rain and high winds into Connecticut on Sunday into Monday, and as a result this will impact Southern’s opening activities and New Student move-in schedule early next week.
New (First-Year and Transfer) Students
New Student Move-In Day, originally scheduled for Monday, (August 23), will now take place on Tuesday (August 24), starting at 9 a.m. New students who had selected a move-in time for Monday will keep that same time frame for Tuesday. Those who need to select a different new move-in time should contact the Office of Residence Life at firstname.lastname@example.org, indicating a preferred move-in time between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
New Owl Welcome activities for first-year students are canceled for Tuesday but will continue on Wednesday (August 25) from 12:30 to 6 p.m., as per the original schedule.
Transfer students scheduled to participate in Monday’s Transfermation Program will be contacted separately.
The move-in schedule for sophomores on Tuesday remains unchanged. Sophomore Start-Up events will be held as scheduled on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Graduate Student Orientation for Monday (August 23) will be postponed. More information on rescheduling the event will be forthcoming. Graduate Student Orientation for Tuesday (August 24) will continue as planned.
Students already in Residence Halls
Student-athletes, student leaders and others who are already in the residence halls should vacate their rooms and leave for home by Saturday evening at 7:00 pm, if possible. An email advisory will be sent when it is safe to return to campus, following any necessary post-storm clean up.
Dining halls will be closed on campus after Saturday evening, but food will be delivered to residential students who are unable to return home. Any student unable to leave campus should email email@example.com by noon on Saturday. Please note that students remaining on campus will be relocated to a central location for safety.
Employees are asked to close all office windows and outside doors before leaving campus and any vehicles that will be on campus during the weekend should be moved to the parking garages.
Further information will be distributed on Sunday once the track of the storm becomes more clear. For planning purposes, any student-related activity or event that is scheduled to be held on campus Sunday or Monday should be postponed or moved to a virtual format.
