Celebrating the Class of 2020 - Cap and Gown Update

May 11, 2020

The email below was distributed to students regarding the pending distribution of caps and gowns and other information regarding a celebration of the Senior Class of 2020 next week.

More than 500 students have signed up for delivery of commemorative yard signs to their homes so far and scores of others have been contributing to a virtual yearbook that will go live on our website on May 22, the originally scheduled date for Undergraduate Commencement.

As you’ll read below, commencement ceremonies for both undergraduates and graduates – either in-person or virtual – will be announced when the university’s operating status for the fall semester is confirmed.

In the meantime, please reach out to graduating seniors that you have taught or assisted during their years at Southern, congratulate them on their accomplishments and ensure that they know the latest information about our Senior Celebration plans. Thank you!

Southern Seniors!

A number of you have been asking for the opportunity to purchase caps and gowns to mark your graduation from Southern, and we wanted to let you know that we have been working with our University Bookstore to have them available for online purchase by week’s end. We will send you a notice when the link to purchase goes  live.

Also, if you haven’t already, please read the email below that was distributed to the Senior Class last week. As you’ll see, we have a number of activities in place to celebrate our graduating class – and we’d like you to be involved!

Finally, we are still planning to hold a commencement ceremony to honor your achievements. We currently have venue dates secured in late summer, mid-fall and early winter for a traditional,  on-ground ceremony. If in-person events are not viable due to the continued need for social distancing and other health safety measures, we will hold a virtual commencement at a date TBD.

We‘ll make an announcements with specific dates – for both undergraduate and graduate ceremonies – once we know what Southern’s operating status will be in the fall. But the bottom line is that we want to ensure that we honor our graduating seniors in the best way we possibly can.

LETTER TO THE SENIOR CLASS:

Dear Class of 2020,

It’s officially May and the beginning of the end of your journey as an undergraduate student at Southern. Congratulations! Though we may not be able to come together this month for an official Commencement, we have some ideas for celebrating you in store!

Senior Class Page
This year we’ve created a Class of 2020 virtual yearbook, and we need you to sign it! You can leave a farewell to your faculty and classmates, share some favorite memories and show off a few of your favorite photos from Southern – including one for your “class portrait.” All of these will be displayed together in a class page, where we’ll also feature other commemorative university content from your time with us. Please send us your entries by May 17th to guarantee inclusion for launch! https://form.jotform.com/201185510492045

Signs
Since we also know that Commencement is about sharing your achievement with the people you love, we’re printing signs for you to display in your front yard or window. There are a number of ways to receive them. If you live in Hartford, New Haven, Middlesex, or Fairfield counties, you may be able to have them delivered – and it could be by someone you know! Otherwise we’ll be happy to ship them to you. https://form.jotform.com/201215658534049

Lastly, be on the lookout for an email in the next few days to learn how to get this year’s Class of 2020 t-shirt!
